Frequent Questions about the Program:
I get an error message when I run the program. What should I do?
First you should make sure you are using the latest version of the program. The program has been available since 2002, during which time there have been many enhancements and improvements. Program errors (bugs) are continually being fixed as they come to light, so it always pays to make sure you are using the latest version of the program. If you are not sure how to upgrade, refer to the “How can I upgrade?” question on this page. The current version of the program is 8.5.1. You can find out what version of the program you are using by looking at the “About” box from the main menu. It also shows on the welcome screen when the program starts up.
If this does not fix the problem we would like you to tell us about it. The following information would be very helpful:
1) Is there a message associated with the error? Sometimes when an error occurs in a computer program it causes the program to shut down straight away. Sometimes a pop-up message appears with some details about the error. Sometimes it affects the whole computer so you have to restart. On other occasions you can carry on using the program. What sort of error are we talking about, and what is the error message, if any?
2) What exactly happens to produce the error? For example: “I right-click on the deck, choose such-and-such option off the menu, and the error occurs”.
3) Does this error occur every time you repeat the action, or just some of the time? Does it only occur with certain decks, or under certain circumstances?
4) What operating system you are using (Windows 98, XP etc)? What version of the program you are using?
5) Sometimes when an error occurs in the Orphalese Tarot, the program produces a log report. If so you can find it in the program directory with the name “errors.txt”. Errors are logged in order, with the time they occur, so you should be able to find any relavant information towards the end of the file.
All this information should be posted on the forum. If you want to send the whole error file or a screen shot, please let us know and we will give you an email address you can use. We do take error reports seriously and we always try to fix the problem.
How can I upgrade to a more recent version of the program?
You can download the latest version of the program from the Downloads page on this website. The main link is to download the full set-up program. Beneath this there is a link to download the “upgrade”. The upgrade is identical to the main set-up except that it does not include any tarot decks. The main set-up installs two decks (the Traditional Tarot and the Imperatrix Tarot), so it is a bigger download.
In either case you need to uninstall your current version of the program first. You should do this by going in to “Add/Remove Programs” on your computer’s control panel, selecting the Orphalese Tarot, and pressing the Uninstall button.
Important: If you are using an old version of the program (pre 2006) it will also uninstall the decks that it came with (The Traditional Tarot and the Imperatrix Tarot). If you originally installed the program from the disk that came with Ciro Marchetti’s Tarot of Dreams, it will uninstall that. Therefore you should make a back-up of any of these decks that you want to keep. If you have inadvertently lost a deck in this way, please let us know.
In each case, the set-up files are contained in a zip file. You should open the zip file and locate the setup file. Run the setup file to install the program.
When I run the program I just see a yellow and black square, and it does not deal any cards. What has happened?
When the program does not know which deck to display it just shows a yellow and black square. This means there is no deck selected. It also happens the next time you start the program after an error has occurred (it does this in case the error was associated with a particular deck, to stop it repeating indefinitely).
You can still get a menu up by right-clicking on the said yellow and black square. Choose a deck from your “My Decks” list to make the program function again normally.
Where have my decks gone? When I go to my “My Decks” list I see a menu item which says “Browse for Missing Decks”. What should I do?
The program cannot find any decks in the place it normally looks. This will be [Program Files]/Orphalese/Orphalese Tarot/Packs unless you have specified a different location using the Options form.
Remember that a deck consists of a program directory that contains cards (at least one image file named “00” or “0”) and does not contain any sub-folders. When you browse for your decks, you should browse to the containing folder, the place you keep your decks, not to any deck in particular. If so you will just see the message again, because the deck you browsed to, “The Foo Tarot” or whatever, does not itself contain any decks.
One reason you might see this message is if you uninstalled an old version of the program, and you only had the one or two default decks which the program came with. Old versions of the program (pre-2006) used to remove the decks they came with when uninstalled. The upgrade does not contain any decks because the assumption is that you will already have some, so the upgrade process could leave you without decks. Just download some decks from these pages and you will be back in business. If you are missing a particular deck because the program uninstalled it, please let us know.
When I run the program I get an MSCOREE.dll error. What does this mean?
This means you do not have an appropriate version of the .NET framework installed. The latest versions of the program require version 2 of the .NET framework. You can find a free download for this, as well as more information, by following this link: Microsoft .NET Framework.
Can I run the program on my website, so visitors to my website can get tarot readings?
No. The Orphalese Tarot is a desktop program. You cannot run it on a website. We have thought about offering such a service, but it is not planned in the near future. If you would like to be added to a mailing list so we can let you know if such a thing becomes available, then please send us your details and we will do so.
Frequent Questions About the Website:
What has happened to the Orphalese Tarot Zone?
The Orphalese Tarot Zone has now been combined with this website. When you are logged in, either through a normal browser or using the program itself as a portal, you can get access to additional areas of the site where you will find some of the Tarot Zone content, as well as what you see here.
I am a registered user and I want to log in, but I don’t know what password and user name I should use.
The username you should use to log in is the nickname you use in the Orphalese Tarot Zone, or that you chose when you registered the program.
You can set up a password by going into the website via the program (i.e. just following the “Orphalese Tarot Zone” link or pressing F2 in the normal way). You will need to be using version 7.6 of the program or later to do this. Then you can set up a password for future access through a normal web browser.
How do you download the spreads and card data files on this website?
You can view the spreads and the card data in a normal browser, but to download them for immediate use with the program you will need to enter the page via the program itself. You do not need to be a registered user of the program to do this. Unregistered users (i.e. people who are still taking advantage of the free, unlimited evaluation period) can also download spreads and card data files for immediate use with the program, as long as they are using the program itself as a portal to access these pages.
I have a tarot deck which I created. How can I get it featured on your “Decks by Other Artists and Friends of the Program” page?
Please let us know via the “Contact Us” page. If we think the deck is appropriate we will be happy to feature it. If at any point you decide you want us to remove the deck, just let us know and we will.
Frequent Questions About Registering the Program
I paid for an unlock code but I did not receive it yet – what should I do?
When your payment is processed by PayPal or WorldPay we receive a notification from them, which should lead to the automatic creation of an unlock code which is then mailed to the user. The process can fail at various points, for example if we do not receive the notification, or if there is a problem with our mail server, this will stop the code from being sent out.
If you paid via WorldPay the whole process normally completes in a few minutes. If you have not received a code after half an hour it is probably safe to assume that something has gone wrong and you should let us know.
If you paid via PayPal, it can take take up to three days for them to process your payment, depending on the type of account you have with them (credit card, e-check etc). You should wait until you have confirmation from PayPal that your payment has been completed successfully. If you have this confirmation from them, but no unlock code, then you should let us know.
I have had to reformat my computer/I bought a new computer, and now I don’t remember my unlock code. What should I do?
There is a tool for recovering your registration details at the bottom of the “My Preferences” page (what used to be called the “My OTZ” page). You can access this tool even though you are not logged in as a registered user. However, you will need to be using the site via the portal provided by the program.
You can recover your details using either your email address or your registration number. In either case the details will be sent to the email address you have on record with us. If you do not remember your registration number and your email address has changed, you will have to let us know and we will do our best to locate you in our database. Please remember to keep your contact details up to date on your My Preferences page.
I have received my unlock code but the program does not accept it. What should I do?
The registration procedure consists of two steps. First you unlock the program using the name/unlock code combination provided, and then you register on line by pressing the button on the next screen.
If the program does not accept your name/unlock code combination, please check your typing. Remember that the unlock code is CaSe SeNsItIvE.
If the program gives an error at the second step there could be various reasons for that. The program needs to contact our server via your internet connection, so check that you are connected to the internet and that your firewall is not preventing internet access for the program.
Another possible explanation is that our server could be down. In these cases you will see a message saying something like “Unable to connect to server. Please try again later”. If you continually receive this message please let us know and we will do our best to fix the problem. Obviously, if you are not able to unlock the program at all we will refund your money.
You may also receive a less “friendly” message, if an error occurs during the registration process on the server. Here is an example:
Unable to connect to webservice The error message was: System.Web.Service.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request. --->System.Exception:Method Deprecated at Registration.Validation.GenerateKey(String Application,String User,String CodeWord)
This particular error, for example, is caused by the user trying to unlock an old version of the program. Getting the latest version of the program would fix this, and registration could proceed as normal.
Do I have to pay for upgrades?
Nobody has ever had to pay for upgrades to the Orphalese Tarot program. All upgrades are currently free. There are no plans to charge for upgrades in the future either - it is probable that upgrades will always be completely free, as they are now.
However, we used to make a guarantee on the website that registering the program entitled the user to all future upgrades, and this guarantee was removed at the end of 2005 when we realised that no other software manufacturer would ever make such a pledge.
So anyone who registered before a certain point (around the start of 2006) has this guarantee, which we take as legally binding, and everyone else can rest assured that we have no plans to start charging for upgrades. You can see details of your licence on the My Settings page.
What are the advantages of registering the program?
The principal advangtage of registering the program is that you can have more than three decks in your “My Decks” list. Until you register, only the first three decks in your decks folder appear in the list. After you register, all the decks show up. Not only that, you can also organise your decks into subfolders and these will appear as sub-menus of your “My Decks” list.
Registered users also have access to certain parts of this website that are not available to guests or casual internet surfers. They can post on the forum and send personal messages to other users, they can advertise their tarot reading services on our “Resident Readers” page etc.
By registering the program you also give us a further incentive to carry on making improvements to the program and website, and allow us to keep the website free from advertising.
